Sandplay Therapy is a non-verbal therapy developed by the Swiss Jungian Analyst Dora Kalff to facilitate child therapy. Frau Kalff learned that this form of silent non-verbal therapy can help the adult in working through issues in what is referred to as an analytic process. I have found this therapy to be very powerful for adults in recovery from substance abuse and in dealing with the effects of trauma. When doing Sandplay Therapy the individual selects miniatures from the collection of miniatures provided by the therapist in a space created to do this form of therapy. The person then places the miniatures in a tray containing wet or dry sand. Doing this therapy allows the person to express what is unspeakable in a safe container.
"Sandplay is a non-verbal, nonrational form of therapy that reaches a profound preverbal level of the psyche"
"deep in the unconscious there is an autonomous tendency, given the proper conditions, for the psyche to heal itself."
